Extra & Co-Curricular Activities

The Department organises many interesting programmes, guest lectures, cultural and literary events, visits, English week, Litfests and national level seminars. Padmashree winner Tom Alter; famous journalist and Editor V. Gangadhar; Indian educationalist and creator of Amar Chitra Katha and Tinkle, AnantPai; author C.S. Laxmi; Head of Department, Department of English, Ruparel College Dr. Coelho and Business Communication expert, Dr. Memon have graced the Department with their presence on special occasions and expert talk. Eminent scholars such as Dr. Subhendu Mund, Prof. Diptha Achar from MS University of Baroda, Prof. Aniket Jaware from University of Pune, Dr. Rimli Bhattacharya from University of Delhi and Dr. K. Lavanya and Dr. Laxmi Chandra from English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad have been resource persons for National seminars organized by the Department. International level storyteller Usha Venkatraman, film critic Amrut Gangar, book lover and entrepreneur Amrut Deshmukh and, Bharatnatyam exponent Lakshmi Chakyar were presenters and performers during MEGH Litfest.

The Department is known for employing innovative teaching and testing methods in order to enhance learning. Role play, use of realia, dictionaries, audio visual aids, paper presentations, games techniques, organising visits, film shows, and theatre events is done on a regular basis. Internal exams are conducted through PPT presentations, seminars, role plays, listening to debates, surveys etc. The English Department has been organising author-based programmes like Tagore Week and Jane Austen Day etc. where theatrical presentations, play-readings, poetry recitals and translations, intercollegiate competitions, etc. were held. Students of the Department were taken on visits such as Jaipur Litfest, Times Litfest, Sound and Picture Archives for Research on Women (SPARROW), Kala Ghoda Festival, interaction with the poet Arundhati Subramaniam at SNDT Churchgate, Shakespeare readings by theatre and ad guru Alyque Padamsee, Gerson de Cunha and Sabira Merchant at KC College, and the like. The Department, in its ever-evolving journey has a current strength of about sixty students studying English Literature as a Disciplinary Component and all students of the college studying the compulsory English component in both Arts and Commerce.
