About Programs

• Sociology focuses on society, social behaviour, patterns of social relationships, social interactions and aspects of culture associated with everyday life.
• It is a study of social changes over time and differences between social groups and societies.
• Sociology is a part of the social science group of subjects and intersects with other social sciences such as Politics, Economics, Law and Statistics.
• Sociology offers a distinctive and enlightening way of seeing and understanding the social world in which we live and which shapes our lives.
• Sociology is a discipline that expands our awareness of social connections, customs, traditions and institutions that play an important role in the formation of human history.
• Sociology also develops the skill among students to connect across different disciplinary, social and cultural boundaries.
• Sociology aims to provide students with sound knowledge in the chosen area of study, the ability to apply the knowledge, communicate effectively, ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

Courses Design

In order to create a learning environment and to enrich the experiences of the students a number of activities are conducted which are as follows—

• Lectures by eminent personnel and alumni.
• Arrangement of visits, workshops and seminars for students and faculty.
• Organization of intercollegiate paper presentation and seminars which enable students to interact with their peers from colleges affiliated to the university. The department also reaches out to students from other departments and to those from professional courses within the college.
• Building social relations and awareness of social responsibilities underscores the various programmes conducted by the department.
• INTERGENERATIONAL INTERACTION PROGRAMME (IGI) in which the students are actively involved with senior citizens. This interaction helps them to develop a mature attitude towards aging.
• During the academic year 2018-19 the department of Sociology along with the department of Gujarati organized a STUDENT EXCHANGE PROGRAMME in collaboration with UTS Surajba Mahila Arts College, Nadiad, Gujarat.

Program outcomes

Sociology encompasses elements of scientific inquiry and adopts a humanitarian approach. As a result the students develop a range of transferrable skills including research, essay – writing and statistical analysis.
