About Programs
English is a global language and the most used language option for communication across the country and the world. This makes it a most sought after subject in undergraduate programs. English Literature course provides understanding in different forms of literature namely Prose, Poetry, Drama and so on. It develops ability to think critically and gain a thorough knowledge of literary history, theory and criticism. It enhances knowledge of literary traditions from different cultures across the world. Besides English Literary studies, one can specialize in English Language and Linguistics too.
English is a compulsory subject in English and vernacular medium schools. The Media industry is always in search of candidates with good knowledge of English. The publishing companies also have a need for graduates in English. In addition, they also find use of the language for communication in the corporate world. Thus, Bachelor of Arts in English prepares learners for career in teaching, media, advertising, writing, and publishing, Law, Event management and for advancement in any field in which communication skills are important.
Courses Design
At Shri M D Shah Mahila College of Arts & Commerce English is a compulsory course offered to all students of Arts and Commerce in all 6 semesters. While the narratives in the Compulsory Course texts enables students to appreciate human values, increase emotional intelligence, and helps promote critical thinking, the teachers of the department lay ample emphasis on developing LSRW skills and competence in Communication.
Business Communication is offered as a compulsory core component paper for all three years of the BCom Degree course at SNDT Women’s University. This program focuses on equipping students with the tools and techniques necessary to have an edge over others in the competitive work place as also to expand their employment opportunities and enhance their career advancement potential. This programme focuses on an overall development of linguistic and communication skills.
Keeping in mind the need of the students and the ever-growing demand of human resources, specially trained in English, the department started B.A specialization in English. The literature classroom becomes a space for enriching young minds to improve their understanding of the world not only through the beauty of the different genres and forms prescribed but also through the greatness of the everlasting ideas and tangible possibilities which well-known authors, thinkers and writers and narratives/texts possess.
The course is designed to enable students gain 24 credits over a period of six semesters and the Compulsory course in both Arts and Commerce programme looks at developing reading, comprehension, writing and spoken skills in students. With a similar design, students specializing in English study 20 papers spread out over six semesters.
