Economics

About the Subject
Economics is one of the oldest branches of social science which is often thought to have emerged as a systematic branch of knowledge in the 18th century. It examines the way in which individuals and entire societies allocate scarce resources to meet their unlimited needs and desires.

Scope of Economics
There has been a lot of controversy among the economist about the true scope of economics or the subject matter of economics as it has been variously defined by economist. From the various definitions of economics the subject matter of economics can be better known by spelling out the questions economist have been asking and the basic economic problems they have been concerned with. The following are the main questions which have been asked by the economist from time to time.

What goods are produced and in what quantities by the productive resources which the economy possesses?

How are the different goods produced? That is, what production methods are employed for the production of various goods and services?

How is the total output of goods and services of a society distributed among its people?

Are the uses of productive resources economically efficient?

Whether all available productive resources with a society are being fully utilized or are some of them lying unemployed and utilized?

Is the economy’s productive capacity increasing, declining or remaining static over time?

Micro economics and Macro economics
The subject matter of Economics is divided into two parts: Micro economics and Macro economics. These terms were first coined and used by Ragnar Frisch. According to K.E. Boulding, Microeconomics “is the study of particular firms, particular households, individual prices, wages, income, individual industries, particular commodities’ and Macroeconomics “deals not with individual quantities as such but with aggregate of these quantities; not with individual incomes but with the national income; not with individual prices but with the price level; not with individual outputs but with the national output,”.
